Nesting Leg Locks™
Mountain Minimal™ tripods are jam packed with innovation. The most innovative feature? Our patented Nesting Leg Locks™.
Flip locks and twist locks are the two main mechanisms used to lock tripod legs at a desired length. Both styles have their pros and cons.
Rest assured, Nesting Leg Locks™ combine the best of both worlds!
Functioning similar to traditional flip locks, our Nesting Leg Locks™ feature levers that nest within the collapsed tripod. With levers that remain protected from the external environment, our design completely eliminates the risk of snags and makes involuntary leg extensions impossible. But that’s not all!
Before we overwhelm you with all the other perks, let’s take a look at traditional leg locks . . .
Flip locks are often known to be longer lasting, more precise, and more reliable than twist locks. Unfortunately, they snag just about everything. Flip locks snag other gear when retrieving the tripod from within your pack. When strapped to the outside of your pack, flip locks snag the backcountry itself, leading to involuntary leg extensions and broken tripods.

Alternatively, twist locks offer a slim profile, better resistance to dirt and grime and, best of all, they don’t snag! Unfortunately, twist locks may not perform as reliably over time. This style of lock also requires round legs which limits innovation.
Mountain Minimal® tripods feature a primary collapsed width of only 1.8”. This impressively thin profile could only be achieved with non-circular legs. We were left with a mission to improve the traditional flip locks.
Our Nesting Leg Locks™ eliminate snagging and achieve a slim profile, but that’s not all. They also offer improved ergonomics, resulting in quicker and easier adjustments, and superior protection from dirt and grime as compared to traditional flip locks. When it comes to durability, we challenge you to find a tougher leg-lock on the market!
